Record Store Day
By Benjamin Irons
Most would argue that the modern-day modus operandi for purchasing music has long surpassed a generation of CD, vinyl and cassette buyers. Wrong. Record Store Day celebrates its ninth year in the public eye tomorrow, evidently overshadowing those opting to stream, download, or even pirate online copies of their favourite songs and albums.
But what makes it so special, I hear you ask? Well, RSD offers collectors a chance to revel in the trading of limited releases for the year across over 200 nationwide record stores; be it a special edition 12” picture disc, unreleased 10” live recordings, or even multi-coloured 7” EP’s limited to 500 copies, collectors thrive on getting their mitts on the hottest exclusives on the anniversary of the big day.
BBC Music will partner up with RSD tomorrow to hail the independent stores across the world that willingly participate annually, as well as commemorating 227 years of the vinyl format.
