FKA Twigs releases third instalment in AVANTgarden series
English singer-songwriter, FKA Twigs has released the third instalment in her digital zine, AVANTgarden; an Instagram-based visual exploration into various themes and topics, utilising the platform's new "sliders" feature.
The first issue, "ROOTS. SHOCK. BEAUTY.", was released back in October last year, and comprises of a 10-page series that explores braided hairstyles, featuring friends of the singer and prior collaborators, which include Suzannah Pettigrew (editor and set designer), Matthew Joseph (stylist), and Rio Shreedharan (hair stylist).
The third issue, titled "MEATSPACE", is a collaboration between Twigs and American electronic producer, Oneohtrix Point Never, aka Daniel Lopatin, and tells the story of a dystopian future, "where A.I have slaughtered most of the human race, sparing only the artists — including lead character anomalie — in the pursuit of fully understanding and exploiting humanity".
"They have taken everything from us - we created them, and now they have taken everything we hold dear", Twigs' opening narration explains. The character designs and accompanying artwork, provided by London-based illustrator Icky H, depict the dark futuristic environment, and follows the main protagonist "Anomalie", voiced by Twigs: “The story sees anomalie’s thresholds pushed to their limits, causing her to transcend into an ‘evolved human’ and allowing her to channel powers through emotions, mysticism and nature. She unlocks powers in those around her and it becomes clear she is the only hope for humankind.”, the publication reads. Lopatin admits that Twigs inspired the main character and much of the stories inside the zine.
