Field Day 2018 through the eyes of Joey Yu

“I tend to stay very focused when I’m drawing, so I sort of forget where I am,” tells London-based illustrator, Joey Yu. Despite the energy of festivals across the globe, there always seems to be a certain stillness captured through the lens of the world's photographers, never really quite manifesting that hustle and bustle. Through illustration however, Joey Yu's calculated haste helps to document the festival buzz in a totally new light.

On the roster for this year's Field Day festival in London were artists like AJ Tracey, Princess Nokia, Mr. Jukes, Thundercat, Loyle Carner, Tom Misch and Erykah Badu, many of which Yu was able to visualise through energetic illustrations. It's Nice That's Lucy Bourton wrote: "Over the two days, I’m constantly stunned by how quick at drawing Joey is, holding two to three pencils in hand at once and switching tools consistently. The results of our weekend are illustrations that mirror the festival experience: busy for sure, a little bit messy in parts but with layer upon layer of fun".

Yu was given the opportunity to draw portraits of several performers, including Mr Jukes, who sat "serenely" outside his cabin before he went on stage to perform. She was also asked by grime artist, AJ Tracey, to draw his performance on stage: "Drawing on stage was unbelievable... he got the audience to start moshing and I can’t say I’ve ever seen a mosh pit from on stage before. I was thinking, should I be drawing this? Or shall I just pause for a second and watch because it’s such a rare opportunity?".
